Up there at the top of the blog, my little tag line goes something like this: Seeking Simplicity in the Midst of Chaos.
I have spent years in search of that simplicity. With three people with ADHD and two with OCD in our home, simplicity is the essence of survival! I have found a good deal of it through simplifying what we eat, what we use, and how we consume products. In 2015 we moved even further into real foods and lost 33 lbs in the process! But one major sticking point remains to bring great chaos to our home: clutter. Lots and lots of clutter.
It doesn’t seem to matter how much I declutter, or which technique I follow, there’s always more clutter. Trust me, I’m a FlyBaby from 15 years ago; I’ve bought dozens of organizational books; and I’ve tried apps galore. I always end up with more clutter! So when this book appeared, The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up, I was skeptical. Majorly skeptical. Been there, done that.
Still, I was sick and tired of clutter, and several friends that I respect were raving about the method. So I downloaded the book. And lo and behold, this method was different. Very different! I managed to get through three categories before my busy season hit–clothing, books and kitchen.
Let me tell you, I’ve stayed skeptical. I keep waiting for things to fall apart again–only, it’s been five months and they haven’t. The areas that weren’t decluttered are still a mess. The areas that were Konmari’d are not. They have stayed tidy for five months, without me spending a ton of effort to keep them that way.
If you are looking to make Getting Organized one of your resolutions for the New Year, let me invite you to join us in a 10 Week Konmari Challenge! We have a group on Facebook to do it together. I’ve broken the Marie Kondo method down into weekly and daily challenges to make it easy to digest. We have a place for people to share their before and after, to answer questions and to encourage each other on. Some are further along in the process than others, and that is A-okay! The point is to be there and use the motivation to keep going. If you want to join us, click here and join our Facebook group, The Life-Changing Magic of Konmari.
Think about it–if we stay on schedule, we will have a tidy and peaceful home before everyone else starts their Spring Cleaning. Doesn’t that sound fantastic? What will you do when your home is tidy and stays that way? Join us in the group as we kick the Chaos Monster to the curb!
